When an analysis returns N/A: A lesson on honesty in sports news

It is 3 a.m. There is no stolen Baron, no referee whistle, no falling volleyball. In front of me is only a long sports analysis document with the letters N/A repeated in every line. No team, no player, no data, no source citation. My wrist has healed, but I still type as if I owe someone an accurate analysis. And because of that debt, I learned the first lesson of this year: a sports writer must never fill an empty space with illusions. This is not an attack on anyone. It is a reminder that journalism is a contract. The writer promises to verify; the reader promises to trust. If one side breaks that contract, even the most beautiful saves and serves become nothing more than images without blood flow. Sports fans do not come to the stadium to listen to flattery. They come to see an honest story about people who sweat. That story only exists when the writer asks: what is really happening? A sports newspaper does not need to always have the answer. It needs to ask the right question at the right time. If the document is empty, the right question is not “who will win”, but “where is the source hiding?” We must not create stories from imagination when the only honest answer is that we do not have enough information yet. Baron can wait. The match can wait. But truth must never wait.
